BOOKSHELF: From Farm Boy to Prize Boxer

The new novel “A Brotherhood of Broken Noses” takes a look at a farm boy’s rise in the world of professional boxing in the late ‘70s to early ’80s.

“Quick” Fairchild, a local Golden Gloves boxing champ, heads to L.A. to fulfill his dream of becoming a professional boxer and saving the family farm, despite his father’s warnings to stay away from that city.

Eventually in the story, Quick is offered the chance to take on the champ. His dream moment! But his manager warns him not to take the champ on yet. He is not ready. His last boxer ruined his life and career in a similar situation.

On the other side, businessmen in the boxing industry have promised Quick a big payout to take on the champ and go 15 rounds.

Quick is left to choose. Does he follow the dream with a possible risk to his health and career? Or

does he pull back?

It is the classic theme of a young man learning if he has what it takes. And the lessons he learns along the way.

The broken noses theme applies well to the story. On the larger scale of life, it symbolizes the tough times everyone goes through in life and how they respond to it. This fits well with the various characters Quick meets along his journey.

On the smaller scale, a broken nose is the initiation point for boxer sin the profession. A broken nose

means you are a boxer. However, it doesn’t mean you are ready to face the champ.
